ABOUT THE BISHOP KING SOCIETY
The Bishop King Society is an association of laity and clergy who volunteer to help the Dean and staff of the Cathedral maintain a full liturgical calendar at the Cathedral by assisting with special liturgical services. The society is named for Edward King (1829-1910), Bishop of Lincoln, known and loved for his holiness and devoted pastoral ministry. King also became notorious as the subject of an ecclesiastical trial in which he was reproved for ceremonial observances which allegedly violated Prayer Book rubrics, such as mixing water with the wine in the Chalice and making the Sign of the Cross for absolution and blessing. His personal holiness and pastoral effectiveness continue to be an inspiration and ideal of consecrated Christian life.
