Frequently Asked Questions

AT WHAT AGE SHOULD MY SON APPLY?

We welcome applications from boys of any age. It is important that boys have unchanged voices as they sing the top part in the choir. The boys currently range in age from 7—16. Most boys applying will be between the ages of  7 & 12.

DOES MY SON ALREADY NEED TO BE A SINGER?

It is important to know that we are not looking for trained singers. A large part of being a chorister here is the training provided. While some boys will have already taken singing/instrumental lessons, others will have no prior musical experience. Boys are admitted to the choir based on musical aptitude and potential.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE AUDITION?

Auditions usually last around 15 minutes. The Director of Music will ask boys to sing some simple phrases and pitches given on the piano and to read aloud. Auditions also give the boys and their families an opportunity to discover more about The Cathedral and the Choir.

SHOULD MY SON BE RELIGIOUS?

The Choir leads worship in the nation's oldest Episcopal Cathedral. A lot of our rehearsal time is spent understanding the texts we sing and our role in the liturgy. That being said, we welcome boys from all faith backgrounds.
